Education: Discovery Camp for Kids

Is there such a thing as too much fun? Naaaaahhhh!

For in the end, we will conserve only what we love, We will love only what we understand. We will understand only what we are taught.

A Long History behind a Young Program

The brain-child of the Trust's Deputy Director, Discovery Club was first launched in 1994, but its roots go back 30 years. In the early 1970s the Trust first implemented fun environmental education programs for its young members. Skills and experiences that went into the design of Discovery Club are tried and true and emerge from the Trust\'s 30 year history of success in environmental education.

Success Rewarded!

The successes of Discovery Club and the promise it holds to benefit thousands of young Bahamians were recognized earlier this year when the Lyford Cay Foundation awarded the Club a three-year grant. The grant is being used to expand the Club to key Family Islands (see map below) and to establish new chapters on New Providence. For more information on Discovery Club coming to your community contact Monique Sweeting.

Fun learning?

Definitely! But within a structured and progressive framework. Discovery Club kids participate in activites that lead toward badge awards. The choices are fun and wide-ranging. Bugs. Astronomy. Camping. Coral Reefs. Muddy Mangroves. First Aid. And many more

Topping Things Off

Discovery Club kids travel to a National Park at the end of each year and have the time of their lives exploring and experiencing the best of The Bahamas for themselves.

A Star Club Member

Ashli Fox joined Discovery Club as soon as she was old enough to. Right away Club directors knew she was special. Her enthusiasm, great general knowledge, and genuine concern for the natural resources of The Bahamas were obvious to all. Ashli earned every Club award possible. With the support of the Trust's Education Office, Ashley submitted an application to the United Nations to participate in one of their Youth Summits on the Environment. Not only was her application accepted, Ashli was also invited to make a presentation at the summit on her experiences with and hopes for the Bahamian and global environment. Ashli continues to be involved in the work of Discovery Club and the Bahamas National Trust.
