Passing of Michael Lightbourn Past President of the Bahamas National Trust
2/10/2012 11:25:23 AM
Michael E. Lightbourn of Treasure Cay and formally of Nassau passed away February 6th, 2012 succumbing to advanced lung cancer. He is survived by his wife Elouise Lightbourn, son Edward and his wife Sara, daughter Katherine and her husband Stephen; his grandchildren Celena, William, Claire and Miles.
Michael was born on January 29, 1927 and originally trained as an optometrist in Toronto and Chicago during the end of World War II. Michael spent most of his career managing the family per-fume business on Bay and George Street in Nassau. After retirement he moved to Abaco and spent his time in his garden with his favorite native flora collected from over 50 years of exploring throughout the archipelago with many wonderful colleagues. He was active in conservation issues throughout his life, especially with the Bahamas National Trust during its formative years.
The Bahamas notes with great sadness the passing of BNT Past President Michael Lightbourn. Michael was a true supporter of the Bahamas National Trust. He was at every AGM and Council Meeting until he moved to Abaco and he often traveled to Nassau just to attend our Annual General Meetings.
He was always interested in our work and often forwarded articles, which he felt, would help us with our work. He had a wonderful spirit and love for The Bahamas as well as an amazing knowledge of the flora and fauna of our islands, which he willing shared with staff and many scientific researchers.
A self taught botanist and natural historian he was the perfect example of how everyday people with a love for The Bahamas and its special island ecology can make a difference. His passing is a very sad event for the BNT. We extend heartfelt sympathy to his close friends and family.
A private memorial service will be held in Nassau.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations be made to the Abaco Friends of the Environment or the Bahamas National Trust
